Klarna rebuilds its membership tiers, dropping pay-later service fees across Europe

What happened
On 13 August 2026 Klarna announced a rebuilt membership programme with four tiers: Klarna Everywhere at EUR 4.99 a month, Plus at EUR 9.99, Premium at EUR 19.99 and Max at EUR 44.99. The revamp removes consumer service fees on pay-later transactions across all tiers, raises in-app cashback to up to 1.5% on every purchase with up to four times that at featured partner stores, and puts the total annual value of perks at as much as EUR 6,000. Fee-free pay-later remains available without a membership at partner stores.
Rollout runs over the coming weeks across eleven European markets: Denmark, Germany, Austria, Italy, France, Spain, Belgium, the UK, Norway, Sweden and Finland.
Why it matters
Klarna is moving the money it earns from the consumer side to the subscription line and away from per-transaction service fees, weeks before UK BNPL affordability rules bed in and while it is being rebuilt as a neobank rather than a BNPL. For merchants the read is competitive: a fee-free pay-later that works at any store weakens the reason to sign a Klarna acceptance agreement to reach Klarna users, and pushes the value of Klarna's merchant network toward cashback placement rather than checkout presence.
What to watch
Whether subscription revenue actually replaces the removed service fees in Klarna's Q3 print, how merchants respond to a pay-later that no longer needs their integration, and whether German and UK consumer-credit rules constrain the fee-free tiers.
