Adyen becomes Flatpay's acquiring and embedded-finance backbone across seven European markets

What happened
Adyen announced on 23 September 2026 that it will act as financial infrastructure partner to Danish SMB acquirer Flatpay, supplying local acquiring, international licensing and local card-scheme integrations across Flatpay's seven active European markets: Denmark, Germany, Finland, the UK, France, the Netherlands and Italy. Flatpay, founded in 2022, serves more than 100,000 SMB merchants and keeps ownership of the local merchant relationship and its high-touch field-sales model; Adyen supplies the processing layer beneath it.
The release also sets out a roadmap for Flatpay to draw on Adyen's Embedded Finance suite for instant settlement, cash advances, business accounts and card issuing.
Why it matters
This moves the processing behind a six-figure SMB estate onto Adyen in seven markets at once, and it is the clearest sign yet that Adyen intends to reach European small merchants through platform partners rather than its own direct sales. Flatpay competes with SumUp, myPOS, Viva.com, Teya and Square for the same counter, and the deal re-rates what that tier of acquirer can offer: a single-market challenger can now put enterprise-grade acquiring and, later, credit and issuing behind its terminal without building licences market by market.
For Adyen it converts a competitor tier into distribution, adding SMB volume without the cost of acquiring those merchants one at a time.
What to watch
- Whether the migration of Flatpay's existing estate onto Adyen completes across all seven markets and on what timetable
- Which Embedded Finance products land first and whether cash advances or issuing actually ship
- Whether rival SMB acquirers respond by signing comparable infrastructure deals rather than holding their own licences
