Mastercard Open Finance puts Pay by Bank behind ZEN.COM's merchants in nine European markets

What happened
Announced on 28 October 2026: ZEN.COM offers Pay by Bank to all of its merchants, and for wallet top-ups, in Germany, Austria, Spain, Belgium, the Netherlands, Italy, Portugal, Ireland and Lithuania, running on Mastercard Open Finance through a single integration. The announcement follows the rollout rather than opening it: the service was already live across all nine markets as of September 2026.
Why it matters
A card scheme is selling the account-to-account rail that competes with its own cards, and selling it as acceptance infrastructure a PSP can switch on across nine markets at once. That is the commercial model Mastercard is testing against the bank-owned alternatives in the same markets, Wero and the national schemes, and the integration count is the pitch: one connection instead of nine open-banking contracts.
What to watch
Whether Mastercard Open Finance signs PSPs with larger European merchant books, and what share of ZEN.COM checkout volume moves off cards onto the rail once it is the default option.
