Mollie closes its EUR 1.05-1.1bn acquisition of GoCardless, creating a 350,000-merchant European group

NetherlandsUnited KingdomEU

What happened

Mollie completed its acquisition of GoCardless on 1 September 2026, in a transaction valued at roughly EUR 1.05-1.1bn with more than 90 percent of the consideration paid in shares and the balance in cash. The combined group serves more than 350,000 businesses across 30-plus markets and pairs Mollie's card and local payment method acceptance with GoCardless's bank-payment and Pay by Bank infrastructure across 38 countries.

Koen Koeppen, Mollie's CEO, leads the group; GoCardless continues as 'GoCardless, a Mollie company' under co-founder Hiroki Takeuchi. The two businesses stay operationally separate for now, with no immediate changes to customer contracts.

Why it matters

This is the largest European PSP consolidation of the year outside the Global Payments-Worldpay deal, and it is a bet on a specific thesis: that the SME and mid-market merchant will buy card acceptance, direct debit, Pay by Bank, a business account and financing from one provider rather than four. It also puts a genuinely scaled A2A rail inside a card-first PSP just as Wero, Pay by Bank and the Instant Payments Regulation move bank payments toward the checkout.

For Adyen, Stripe and the bank-owned acquirers, the competitive question shifts from card economics to who owns the merchant's whole money flow.

What to watch

  • Whether the two stacks are actually merged or run in parallel indefinitely
  • Whether GoCardless's UK, US, Canadian and ANZ base is kept or pruned back to Europe
  • Whether the group's Pay by Bank volume starts showing up in Wero and iDEAL migration numbers
