Mollie relaunches Pay by Bank on GoCardless rails in the Netherlands

Netherlands

What happened

Mollie has relaunched Pay by Bank, rebuilt on the open banking connectivity of GoCardless, which Mollie acquired earlier in 2026. The release cites direct connections to more than 2,500 banks across Europe and a checkout that completes in three steps instead of the five typical of other open banking flows. One technical foundation now carries one-off payments, recurring payments and invoicing, with the customer's IBAN captured during the payment so a one-off can be converted into a Direct Debit.

It is live for businesses and consumers in the Netherlands, with the rest of Europe planned throughout 2027. Mollie also published a public Issuing Bank Performance Page showing how reliably individual banks perform inside those connections.

Why it matters

This is the first merchant-facing product Mollie has shipped on GoCardless, so it shows what that acquisition was for: pan-European bank-to-bank rails sitting under Mollie's own checkout rather than a bought-in redirect. For Dutch merchants it puts a guaranteed, chargeback-free account-to-account option next to iDEAL and Wero on the same contract, and the IBAN capture turns a single acceptance event into a recurring billing relationship.

It also shifts the Dutch pay-by-bank contest from methods competing on consumer reach towards acquirers competing on how short the checkout is.

What to watch

Whether the "rest of Europe throughout 2027" plan turns into named markets with dates, and whether Mollie prices Pay by Bank below its card rates once it runs beyond the Netherlands.
