Mastercard launches Wallet Services so banks and merchants can build contactless into their own apps
What happened
Mastercard launched Wallet Services, a package of iOS and Android SDKs, a Secure Element applet and integration with Mastercard Digital Enablement Service tokenisation, letting banks, fintechs, merchants and platforms add contactless payments to their own apps without separate per-platform integrations, security approvals and EMVCo certification. The SDKs are available in the 200-plus countries and territories where MDES operates; iOS contactless is rolling out in markets where Apple has opened NFC access, including the US, UK and Europe. Partner banks are already building features expected to reach consumers by the end of 2026.
Why it matters
Apple's NFC opening in Europe removed the legal barrier to third-party wallets but left the engineering barrier intact, which is why almost nothing shipped. Removing the certification and integration cost makes bank-branded and merchant-branded wallets economically plausible for the first time — and a merchant wallet that holds its own tokens is the route by which large retailers stop routing every in-store tap through Apple Pay or Google Pay.
What to watch
Whether any European retailer or banking group ships a first-party contactless wallet on this stack by year-end, and whether girocard or Wero credentials appear inside one.
