Ingenico launches stablecoin payments at physical POS via WalletConnect Pay partnership
What happened
On 13 January 2026 at NRF, Ingenico announced a partnership with WalletConnect Pay to enable stablecoin payments at physical checkout. The Digital Currency Application supports five leading stablecoins (USDC, EURC, USDT) across 700+ compatible wallets on millions of Ingenico Android terminals. Available to acquirers and PSPs immediately.
CEO Floris de Kort emphasised no extra hardware and no merchant need to hold digital currency balances. WalletConnect facilitated over $400 billion in network volume in 2025.
Why it matters
Being first among major terminal manufacturers to enable in-store stablecoin acceptance positions Ingenico ahead of PAX (which also supports crypto) and Verifone in an emerging payment category. The 'no extra hardware' approach leverages the existing AXIUM Android installed base, potentially strengthening the upgrade case for merchants still on legacy Linux terminals. However, actual merchant adoption of stablecoin POS payments remains unproven at scale.
What to watch
Monitor actual merchant adoption rates of stablecoin POS payments through 2026. Track whether acquirers and PSPs actively enable the feature or if it remains a demonstration capability. Watch competitor responses — PAX already supports stablecoin acceptance.
