EPI joins nexo standards to put Wero acceptance on ISO 20022 terminal infrastructure
EUFranceGermanyBelgiumNetherlands
What happened
EPI Company has become a member of nexo standards, the body behind the open ISO 20022-based acceptance specifications and messaging protocols used in European point-of-sale estates. EPI says membership lets it track how those standards are applied to account-to-account payments and work towards Wero being supported across a wide range of acceptance infrastructure.
At NRF Europe in Paris in September 2026 EPI demonstrated Wero running on payment terminals in a nexo-based acceptance environment. EPI CEO Martina Weimert: 'Open standards and interoperability help create those conditions.' No merchant-facing change has taken effect yet; in-store rollout is signposted for 2027, with NFC integration described as longer term.
Why it matters
Wero's in-store problem is not the wallet, it is the terminal estate: a method that cannot ride existing acceptance software has to be integrated acquirer by acquirer. Joining the standards body that owns the ISO 20022 acceptance messaging is how EPI tries to make Wero a configuration rather than a project for the installed base, which is the cheapest available route to the physical point of sale.
It also tightens the standards story behind the European sovereignty push, alongside the European Network for Payments incorporation in Madrid in late September.
What to watch
Whether a nexo release actually carries Wero A2A message flows, which acquirers and terminal vendors commit to supporting it, and whether the 2027 in-store date survives contact with certification work.
