Adyen and Checkout.com both switch on Visa Payment Passkey for UK merchants on the same day
What happened
On 29 October 2026 Adyen added Visa Payment Passkey to Authenticate, a module of its Adyen Uplift suite, with the UK as the first market and a global expansion planned for 2027. Checkout.com announced the same capability the same day, going live in phases with selected merchants in the UK and Europe and running on merchants' existing authentication setup so no new checkout build is needed.
Why it matters
Passkeys replace the one-time code at the heart of SCA, and card-not-present authentication is where European acquirers compete on conversion rather than price. Two of the largest enterprise acquirers launching on the same day and in the same market means Visa has lined up distribution rather than run a pilot, and it puts a deadline on every gateway that still sends shoppers an SMS.
What to watch
Published conversion and abandonment data from the first UK merchants, whether Mastercard matches the rollout, and how fast either acquirer moves beyond the UK.
