bunq switches on Wero in four countries
GermanyNetherlandsFranceBelgiumEU
What happened
The neobank bunq switched Wero on for its customers in Germany, the Netherlands, France and Belgium, covering person-to-person transfers by phone number and online shopping payments. bunq calls itself Europe's second-largest neobank and puts the Wero network at 59 million users.
Why it matters
Wero's e-commerce case depends on how many payers a merchant reaches, and until now that number came almost entirely from incumbent retail banks. A pan-European neobank joining adds reach in four markets at once, including the Netherlands ahead of the iDEAL migration, and it does so without the national-bank sequencing that has paced every earlier Wero launch. The user figure also moves: 59 million against the 57 million cited earlier in September.
What to watch
Whether other neobanks follow, whether bunq customers appear in Wero checkout conversion data, and how the Dutch iDEAL-to-Wero migration schedule holds through Q4.
