Verifone patents wireless tamper detection for unattended payment terminals
EU
What happened
Verifone was granted US Patent No. 12,664,553 for Wireless Tamper Detection, a technique that lets a payment terminal continuously monitor its own radio environment and flag physical interference, including concealed card-skimming hardware. Rather than detecting a specific attack signature, the terminal recognises when its physical surroundings have changed in an unnatural way.
Verifone is positioning the technology for unattended environments — fuel pumps, self-checkout lanes and outdoor kiosks — where no staff member is present to spot a tampered device.
Why it matters
Unattended and self-checkout terminals are the fastest-growing part of the European estate and the hardest to police physically, and skimming losses there fall on merchants and acquirers through chargebacks and PCI exposure. Self-monitoring hardware shifts part of that burden back into the device, and if it becomes a procurement expectation it raises the specification bar for every terminal vendor competing on unattended tenders.
What to watch
Whether the capability ships in a shipping Verifone unattended line rather than staying a patent, and whether PCI PTS or acquirer tender specifications start asking for equivalent self-monitoring.
