Francisco Partners signs C$2bn deal to buy Moneris, deepening the payments platform that also owns Verifone
What happened
Francisco Partners signed a definitive agreement to acquire Moneris, Canada's largest acquirer (325,000+ points of commerce, roughly one in three Canadian transactions), from BMO and RBC for C$2.0bn split equally between the banks. The deal, expected to close by the end of Q1 of the banks' fiscal 2027, firms up the approach the corpus tracked as in-talks in May; the release lists Verifone among FP's prior payments investments.
Why it matters
FP already owns terminal maker Verifone; adding a top-tier acquirer signals a strategy of assembling an integrated hardware-plus-acceptance platform under one owner. That gives Verifone a captive distribution channel and is the kind of financial-sponsor consolidation now reshaping who European acquirers compete against.
What to watch
Whether FP integrates Moneris with Verifone or runs it standalone, whether the model is exported to Verifone's European estate, and regulatory clearance in Canada before the Q1 fiscal-2027 close.
