secupay puts Mastercard's Pay by Bank into German checkouts with 95 percent bank coverage
What happened
German payment institution secupay has added Mastercard's Pay by Bank to its portfolio, available through its existing integrations and the secuconnect API. The account-to-account method lets a shopper authenticate in their own online banking and confirm by TAN or banking app, with no card data passed to third parties; secupay states 95 percent bank coverage in Germany and offers it through Shopware, WooCommerce and JTL plugins as well as by API for platforms and marketplaces.
First users are the investment platforms Conda Capital and Piece Germany and the art marketplace Art 4 You. Board member Eric Weiss frames it as filling a gap where card limits bite on high-value baskets.
Why it matters
It is a second A2A rail arriving in the German checkout from the card side rather than the bank side, at the same moment Wero is pushing in from EPI. For a merchant the practical question is a cost one: high-ticket baskets that fail or get expensive on card limits move to a bank transfer whose pricing is set by Mastercard rather than by interchange. That makes Pay by Bank a live line item in the card mix, not just a consumer convenience.
What to watch
Whether secupay publishes pricing against its card rates, which German PSPs follow with Mastercard Pay by Bank, and whether merchants use it alongside Wero or instead of it.
