Ecommpay adds direct Bizum connectivity, completing a Spain-Portugal-Italy wallet set with MB WAY and BANCOMAT Pay
What happened
Ecommpay integrated a direct connection to Bizum, Spain's bank-owned mobile payment method, into its platform, alongside the MB WAY (Portugal) and BANCOMAT Pay (Italy) connections it already carried. With the three in place the PSP covers the dominant domestic mobile wallets of the three largest Southern European markets from one integration, and settles them through its own platform, so a merchant does not need a separate local banking relationship or a per-market PSP configuration for each.
Ecommpay frames the move as removing the regional fragmentation that forces cross-border merchants to assemble local acceptance market by market.
Why it matters
The Southern European wallets are the clearest case of domestic methods that a merchant cannot skip and an international PSP cannot easily aggregate: each is bank-owned, each settles domestically, and each has historically needed its own local plumbing. Every gateway that adds all three narrows the advantage local acquirers hold in Spain, Portugal and Italy on exactly that argument, and shifts the acceptance decision back to the merchant's existing PSP relationship.
What to watch
Whether other international gateways complete the same three-wallet set, and whether Bizum's e-commerce reach through non-Spanish PSPs starts showing up in Spanish online payment-mix figures.
