Bizum Pay reaches Spanish supermarket checkouts as Eroski and Caprabo switch it on

Spain

What happened

Eroski and its Caprabo banner now accept Bizum Pay, the in-store NFC function Bizum launched in summer 2026, at the till. The rollout started with Caprabo in Catalonia and extends progressively across the rest of the mainland and Balearic network as individual banks enable in-person Bizum. Spanish press also lists Carrefour, Alcampo and Lidl among grocers taking the method in physical stores, while Mercadona is still piloting after a trial in Soria and already offers it online.

Bizum says in-person payment is possible at more than 1.6 million establishments, roughly 75 percent of Spanish bank terminals, and the scheme had 30.6 million users and processed 67.7 billion euros in 2025.

Why it matters

Grocery is the volume test every European A2A wallet eventually has to pass, and Spain is the first large market where a domestic scheme is being switched on at food retail tills rather than announced for them. Because Bizum Pay runs on the terminals merchants already have, acceptance is a bank-side switch rather than a hardware project, which is why the estate moved this fast. Spanish grocers expect it to price well below Visa and Mastercard, and Bizum has still not published merchant fees.

What to watch

Whether Bizum publishes merchant pricing, when Mercadona moves from pilot to rollout, and how quickly the remaining 25 percent of terminals are enabled.
