Bizum joins a Swift proof of concept that would let its aliases receive money from abroad
SpainEU
What happened
Swift announced on 28 September 2026 a proof of concept that would make the alias directories of domestic payment schemes reachable across borders, with Spain's Bizum, Australia's PayID and Brazil's Pix as the three named platforms. The design matches aliases already held in the domestic systems so a sender in one market can reach a recipient in another using a mobile number or an email address instead of account details.
Participants from four continents include Australian Payments Plus, Bizum, BBVA, CaixaBank, Bradesco, Commonwealth Bank of Australia, Banorte, Banco de Credito del Peru, Citizens Bank, DBS, IDFC FIRST Bank, Ouribank, TerraPay and Veritran. The participating institutions describe the work as a proof of concept rather than a shipping capability, and Swift frames it as the next phase of a broader consumer scheme.
Why it matters
Bizum is the clearest case in Europe of a domestic alias scheme that grew into merchant acceptance - it passed 1.6 million in-store merchants in Spain in September 2026 - and this is the first move to make the same directory addressable from outside the country. The scheme's asset is the alias graph rather than the rail, and if a phone number in Spain can be paid from Brazil or Australia, the same directory is what a cross-border acceptance product would later be built on.
That it is a proof of concept with two Spanish banks in it, and not a corridor, is the honest limit here: nothing changes for a Spanish merchant this year.
What to watch
Whether the proof of concept produces a dated corridor or quietly ends, whether Bizum's operator extends alias reach to merchant acceptance rather than only person-to-person transfers, and whether any euro-area scheme beyond Bizum joins.
