ACI Worldwide to buy Cranium Ventures for its SYNAP card-switching stack
What happened
ACI Worldwide agreed to acquire Cranium Ventures and fold its SYNAP microservices card-switching framework into ACI Connetic for Cards. Terms were not disclosed; closing is expected in Q3 2026 subject to regulatory approval. Cranium, founded in 2018 and operating in the UK, Singapore and Malaysia, has deployed SYNAP at two large processors; its co-founders and technical team move to ACI, and existing SYNAP customers continue to be supported.
ACI Connetic, launched in March 2026, unifies A2A, cards and fraud on one cloud-native platform; ACI processes over 300 billion card transactions a year across acquiring, issuing and ATM.
Why it matters
Card switching is the piece of the acquiring stack that European banks and processors still overwhelmingly run on premises, and replatforming it is what makes A2A and card volume shareable on one rail. ACI buying a cloud-native switch rather than rewriting its own is a read on how urgent that migration has become, and on who ends up supplying it to the mid-sized European acquirers who will not build it themselves.
What to watch
Whether SYNAP is offered standalone or only inside Connetic, which European processors sign for it first, and whether the deal closes inside the stated Q3 window.
