Wero opens to Dutch webshops as eleven banks switch on online payments and the iDEAL migration starts in earnest
What happened
From 26 October 2026 customers of eleven Dutch consumer banks, among them ING, Rabobank, ABN AMRO, ASN Bank and bunq, can pay online with Wero, and payment service providers can start rolling Wero out to Dutch webshops in phases. EPI wants the switch from iDEAL completed by the end of 2027. Subscription payments and pay-on-delivery are expected in the second quarter of 2027, and purchase protection for Dutch consumers now starts on 1 January 2028 rather than this October, with the details to be published in early 2027. EPI's consumer marketing campaign runs from 26 October 2026 to March 2027.
Why it matters
iDEAL is the single largest national A2A scheme in Europe by e-commerce share, so its replacement is the one migration that decides whether Wero becomes a European method or a set of national pilots. Moving purchase protection to 2028 is the telling part: EPI chose to let merchants integrate before the consumer feature that most differentiates Wero from a bank transfer is live, which buys adoption at the cost of the proposition.
What to watch
How fast PSPs enable Wero in Dutch checkouts, what merchants are charged against iDEAL's per-transaction pricing, and whether the end-2027 deadline holds.
