Orange becomes the first merchant in France to take recurring bill payments over Wero
FranceEU
What happened
Orange has begun letting customers of its Sosh brand pay their monthly subscription bills with Wero, directly from their banking app. It is the first merchant bill-payment use case for Wero in France. The service is initially open to BNP Paribas customers and widens to further French banks through the second half of 2026; AXEPTA BNP Paribas handles the technical processing. EPI puts Wero at nearly 40 million users in France and more than 58 million across Europe.
Why it matters
Recurring billing is the volume that card schemes and direct debit have owned uncontested in France, and it is stickier than the one-off e-commerce checkout Wero has been chasing. A telco moving its subscription base onto an A2A rail is the first evidence that Wero can take structural, repeating volume rather than opportunistic baskets, and it gives EPI a merchant category (utilities, telecoms, insurance) with millions of monthly transactions and a strong cost motive to switch.
What to watch
How fast the bank coverage widens past BNP Paribas, whether Orange extends it from Sosh to the main Orange base, and whether other French billers, utilities and insurers in particular, follow before year end.
