N26 adds Wero to its app in Germany and France
What happened
On 11 August 2026 N26 announced that eligible customers in Germany and France can now use Wero directly inside the N26 app, sending and receiving money in seconds with only a phone number or email address instead of an IBAN. Transfers settle in under ten seconds over SEPA Instant, and the German press coverage puts the per-transfer ceiling at EUR 2,500.
Until now N26 customers could only send instantly without an IBAN to other N26 accounts. N26 says a progressive rollout to further markets is planned.
Why it matters
Wero's problem has never been bank count, it is reach into the apps people actually pay from, and N26 is the largest German neobank to switch it on. Every issuer that adds Wero raises the share of the German and French base that can be addressed at a merchant checkout later, which is the leg EPI still has to win against cards.
It also closes a competitive gap: an N26-only instant transfer was a walled garden in a market where girocard and the savings banks already carry the volume.
What to watch
Whether N26 follows with Wero e-commerce checkout and not just peer-to-peer, which markets come next, and whether the addition moves EPI's active-user figure rather than only its registered-user figure.
