BNP Paribas puts Air France, Decathlon and Fnac Darty behind Wero for Merchants as the scheme opens French e-commerce
FranceEU
What happened
At a Paris press event on 8 September 2026, BNP Paribas and EPI presented the first wave of French merchants committed to Wero for Merchants, the scheme's e-commerce product. Air France, Decathlon and Fnac Darty are preparing launches with BNP Paribas acting as the acquiring bank, joining Orange, which has been live for its Sosh customers since 2 September.
EPI put the installed base at 57 million users across France, Germany, Belgium, Luxembourg and the Netherlands, with more than 15 million further consumers still to migrate from Payconiq and iDEAL. Fnac Darty said it will switch on Wero on fnac.com in early 2027 before extending it to stores and its other European markets.
Why it matters
Wero's German e-commerce debut was carried by discounters and specialists; France is the first market where a systemic acquiring bank has put its own balance sheet and brand behind merchant acceptance. Airline, sporting-goods and consumer-electronics baskets are exactly the high-value card volume that interchange and scheme fees are most expensive on, so these names are a direct test of whether account-to-account can take share from Cartes Bancaires co-badged card rails rather than only from transfers.
It also sets the pattern for the Dutch and Belgian migrations, where acquirers rather than banks own the merchant relationship.
What to watch
Whether the named merchants go live on the announced timetable, which acquirers follow BNP Paribas into Wero acceptance in France, and whether French point-of-sale acceptance slips beyond the currently signalled window.
