Amazon starts Wero in the German checkout, with iDEAL to be retired by the end of 2027
What happened
Since 5 August 2026 Amazon's German checkout shows the payment option as 'Bezahlen mit iDEAL | Wero', the first step of migrating the existing iDEAL rail to Wero. Amazon plans to complete the migration by the end of 2027, running both names in parallel during the transition; for shoppers nothing changes mechanically, since the payment is still authorised in the bank's own app as an account-to-account transfer.
The move follows Lidl, which added Wero to lidl.de on 24 July 2026 as the first German grocer, and Decathlon Germany in July. Wero currently reaches roughly 43 million users across Germany, France and Belgium and has processed around 100 million transactions, with Belgium, France, Luxembourg and the Netherlands slated for e-commerce launches, and the Dutch iDEAL-to-Wero migration starting next year.
Why it matters
Every German e-commerce checkout that carries Wero shifts volume off card rails and off PayPal onto an account-to-account transfer where the merchant pays no interchange and no scheme fee, which is exactly the cost line German chains have been contesting. Amazon matters disproportionately because it sets consumer expectations: a payment method a shopper has already used at Amazon is far cheaper for a mid-sized retailer to introduce than one nobody recognises.
It also converts the iDEAL migration from a Dutch technical project into a visible German consumer brand change, giving EPI a distribution channel it could not have bought.
What to watch
Whether Amazon extends Wero beyond the renamed iDEAL flow to its own German customer base, and whether German PSPs report a measurable shift in checkout mix away from cards and PayPal in the autumn trading season.
