Linux Foundation launches x402 Foundation with Visa, Mastercard, Amex, Stripe and Adyen as premier members
EU
What happened
The Linux Foundation declared the x402 Foundation operationally live with 40 member organisations, 17 of them premier members including Visa, Mastercard, American Express, Stripe, Adyen, Fiserv, Google, Amazon Web Services, Shopify, Cloudflare, Circle, Coinbase and Ripple. The protocol, originally built by Coinbase and contributed to open governance, revives the dormant HTTP 402 status code so AI agents, APIs and applications can settle payments inline over standard HTTP, supporting both cards and stablecoins.
The foundation is structured as an open-governance body intended to keep the protocol interoperable and free of lock-in.
Why it matters
Agentic commerce has so far been a series of proprietary vendor announcements, several of them from companies tracked here. Putting the rail under neutral governance with both card networks, the two largest global PSPs and a major European acquirer inside means the acceptance side is being standardised before the demand exists — which decides whether agent-initiated payments arrive as card transactions on existing acquiring economics or as stablecoin settlement that bypasses them.
What to watch
Whether European acquirers beyond Adyen join, and whether the first production integrations settle on cards or on stablecoins.
