Revolut and Visa run France's first passkey-authenticated payment initiated by an AI agent
FranceEU
What happened
Inside Visa's Agentic Ready programme, an AI agent placed a real order with merchant Cleverbridge using a French Revolut Visa card, authenticated by a Visa Payment Passkey rather than a one-time code, PIN or manual card entry. Nobody typed a card number or approved the payment at checkout; the passkey bound the transaction to a verified cardholder and to an instruction given in advance.
Revolut framed the run as a test of whether agent-initiated payments can work in everyday shopping without weakening consent or issuer controls.
Why it matters
The unresolved question for agentic commerce in Europe is not the agent but Strong Customer Authentication: a purchase nobody is present for has to satisfy SCA anyway. Passkeys bound to a prior instruction are the first mechanism that plausibly does both, and an issuer plus a scheme demonstrating it on live rails in an SCA jurisdiction is more informative than any US pilot.
If regulators accept the construction, card rails keep agentic volume that would otherwise push merchants toward pay-by-bank flows with their own consent models.
What to watch
Whether the EBA or the French regulator comments on passkey-bound prior consent as SCA, and which acquirers begin accepting agent-initiated authorisations in Europe.
