Competitive win
French banks roll out CB on Apple Pay in co-badge mode through 2025
What happened
From late 2024 into 2025 major French banks began enabling the Cartes Bancaires (CB) network for Apple Pay in co-badge mode alongside Visa or Mastercard: La Banque Postale started automatic deployment in early December, with BNP Paribas, BPCE, Crédit Mutuel/CIC and Crédit Mutuel Arkéa following progressively between January and summer 2025. CB processes around 15 billion transactions a year, and Adyen made CB-via-Apple-Pay available on its in-store terminals for all merchants in 2025.
Why it matters
Co-badging means Apple Pay tap-to-pay can be routed over the domestic CB scheme instead of the international networks, protecting CB's transaction volumes and acquirer/issuer economics as mobile wallets grow — France's domestic scheme is the largest in Europe.
What to watch
Which French issuers complete CB-on-Apple-Pay enablement, routing/least-cost-routing dynamics between CB and Visa/Mastercard, and CB's positioning relative to Wero in France.
