  • Jun 2025·acquired by BPCE — BPCE signed a memorandum of understanding in June 2025 to buy novobanco, Portugal's fourth-largest bank, followed by acquisition agreements in August and October 2025, and completed the purchase of 100% of its capital on 30 April 2026 for a total price of €6.7bn. Portugal became BPCE's second domestic retail banking market.
  • Mar 2017·acquired by Lone Star Funds — Banco de Portugal selected Lone Star on 31 March 2017 to buy Novo Banco, the bank set up in 2014 from the resolution of Banco Espirito Santo. The sale closed on 18 October 2017 with a EUR 750m capital injection by Lone Star, followed by EUR 250m on 21 December 2017, leaving Lone Star with 75% and the Resolution Fund with 25%.
