Worldpay joins EPI to offer Wero acceptance to European merchants
What happened
In March 2026 Worldpay — acquired by Global Payments in January 2026 — joined the European Payments Initiative to offer Wero acceptance to its European merchant base, adding to existing acquiring partners such as Worldline and Nexi/Nets. Wero reported over 43 million registered users and more than 100 million transactions to date, with e-commerce acceptance live in Germany.
Why it matters
Acquirer distribution is the gating factor for A2A scheme adoption; a large international acquirer integrating Wero lowers the barrier for merchants to add it at checkout and strengthens its competitive position versus cards and PayPal.
What to watch
Which Worldpay/Global Payments markets enable Wero first, additional PSP integrations (Nuvei, Stripe, Adyen), and whether merchant uptake accelerates ahead of the France/Belgium rollout.
