Wero goes live in Luxembourg on 1 September, with Payconiq shutting down on 30 September

What happened
EPI switched Wero on in Luxembourg on 1 September 2026, with the app appearing in local stores and a progressive rollout through the month. BIL, BGL BNP Paribas, Banque Raiffeisen, POST Luxembourg and Spuerkeess are the launch institutions, with LUXHUB as technical service provider. Payconiq, the incumbent mobile payment scheme Wero replaces, closes permanently on 30 September 2026; existing Payconiq QR codes stay usable until year end while merchants swap them for Wero-branded ones. EPI's 2026 European Payment Barometer, surveying 1,027 Luxembourg respondents, found 88 percent intend to use Wero.
Why it matters
Luxembourg is the first market where Wero does not launch alongside an incumbent but replaces one outright, on a hard date, with a full P2P, in-store QR, invoice and e-commerce feature set from day one. That makes it the only clean read available on whether an A2A wallet can absorb a national scheme's user base and merchant estate rather than accrete on top of it, and it is the template EPI will be judged against when iDEAL is retired in the Netherlands. It also puts Wero at the physical point of sale at national scale for the first time.
What to watch
- Actual migration rates by 30 September against the 88 percent stated intent
- Whether merchants have replaced QR codes before the year-end cutoff
- Whether the in-store QR flow proven here is what EPI ships in Belgium and Germany
