Payconiq is switched off in Luxembourg as five banks move their customers and merchants to Wero

EU

What happened

The Payconiq platform ended in Luxembourg on 30 September 2026, closing the migration EPI announced at a press conference in Luxembourg-Kirchberg on 2 September. Wero had been rolled out progressively through September, and the five participating banks - Spuerkeess, BGL BNP Paribas, BIL, POST Luxembourg and Banque Raiffeisen - moved their customers and merchant base across during a July-to-September transition window in which both schemes ran side by side.

Payconiq QR codes already printed on invoices stay scannable through the Wero app until the end of 2026, which is what keeps the switch-off from stranding merchants who have not reprinted. Users keep the P2P transfers, invoice, e-commerce and in-store payments they had, and gain Wero's cross-border transfers; EPI chief executive Martina Weimert and Payconiq International chief executive Jacqueline Boucher both spoke at the September announcement.

Why it matters

A national wallet being decommissioned in favour of Wero is the clearest acceptance milestone the scheme has produced: not an added market but a replaced one, with an installed merchant base and five banks' distribution handed over wholesale. Luxembourg is small, but it is the first time EPI has retired a predecessor rather than launched alongside one, and it makes the migration path concrete for Belgium, where Bancontact Payconiq is the far larger version of the same question.

For merchants it also shows the real cost of such a migration sits in the physical estate - the QR codes on invoices and at the counter - which is why the old codes needed a grace period into year end and the app did not.

What to watch

  • Whether the Belgian Bancontact Payconiq estate gets a comparable dated migration plan
  • How many Luxembourg merchants are still presenting old QR codes when the grace period ends in December
  • Whether in-store contactless, which EPI lists as planned rather than live, arrives before the next market switches
