Visa and Mastercard take Anthropic's commerce-agent blueprint to their merchant networks
What happened
Anthropic published on 2 September 2026 a set of reference designs for retailers building AI shopping and merchant agents on its Claude models, with implementations for retail, travel, telecom and ticketing. Visa, Mastercard and Accenture are named as partners whose role is to distribute the blueprint to their client and merchant networks; the blueprint itself deliberately carries no payment protocol, no checkout and no advertising layer, and no transaction routes through Anthropic.
Shopify has published code showing agent integration with live storefronts and Priceline is running customer-facing agents on the models. Anthropic's own, independently unverified figures put cart sizes up to 35% larger and purchase completion about 60% more likely for a partner running an agent on Claude. Deployment is via the Claude API, Amazon Bedrock, Microsoft Foundry or Google Cloud Vertex AI.
Why it matters
The interesting fact here is what the schemes are doing, not what the model does: Visa and Mastercard are acting as the distribution channel for someone else's agent stack while keeping their own agentic-payment protocols separate from it. That is the opposite of the Nexi/Google Cloud and Adyen/OpenAI pattern, where the payments company binds itself to one AI vendor's rails — and it means European merchants may first meet agentic commerce through a scheme's merchant programme rather than through their acquirer.
The checkout layer being explicitly absent is the point to hold on to: whoever fills it, and on whose protocol, is still open, and that is where the acceptance economics will be decided.
What to watch
Whether Visa's and Mastercard's own agentic-commerce protocols become the default checkout under these blueprints, whether any European acquirer or PSP packages them for its merchants, and whether the cart-size and conversion claims survive independent measurement.
