Getnet launches infrastructure for merchants to accept AI agent-initiated payments
What happened
On 9 June 2026 Getnet, Santander's global merchant platform, announced new infrastructure letting merchants securely accept payments initiated by AI agents. It is built on open standards, protocol-agnostic and interoperable, enabling agents to connect directly to Getnet's payments infrastructure. Getnet enabled compatibility with Mastercard Agent Pay and completed a first real-world agent-initiated payment in Mexico with fintech Neivor; Visa Intelligent Commerce integration is in progress.
Why it matters
Agentic commerce support is becoming a differentiator for acquirers; Getnet positioning alongside Mastercard/Visa schemes raises the baseline expectation that acquirers and terminal estates must accommodate agent-initiated flows.
What to watch
The Visa Intelligent Commerce go-live, expansion from enterprise to SMEs, scheme certification milestones, and whether rivals (Worldline, Nexi, Global Payments) announce comparable agent-pay rails.
