Competitive win
dm adds Wero to its online shop, becoming the second major German retailer to accept the account-to-account wallet
What happened
dm said it will add Wero to dm.de from 25 August, alongside card, Klarna, Apple Pay and PayPal, making it the second big German retailer to accept the account-to-account wallet after Lidl. dm's online revenue is around 1bn EUR; CFO Martin Dallmeier cited Wero's direct bank connection and potential savings versus PayPal's ~1.94% commission, targeting 5% Wero adoption within 6-12 months.
Why it matters
Wero's merchant acceptance is the test of whether Europe's bank-owned A2A wallet can dislodge PayPal at checkout, and a second billion-euro retailer signing on strengthens that case. The explicit comparison to PayPal's ~1.94% commission puts acceptance cost, not just sovereignty, at the centre of the pitch to German chains.
What to watch
Whether dm hits the 5% adoption target, whether Wero moves from dm's online shop into its stores, and which German chain accepts it next.
