Decathlon Germany goes live with Wero on decathlon.de, the first Decathlon market to adopt it
GermanyEU
What happened
Decathlon activated Wero as a payment method on decathlon.de on 20 July 2026, announced the following day, making Germany the first market in the Decathlon group to adopt the European Payments Initiative wallet. Payment is approved directly in the shopper's banking app by fingerprint or face recognition, with no separate app and no card data stored with the retailer.
Decathlon said technical integration for its 110-plus German stores is already in preparation so the method works online and in-store, and a six-week nationwide promotion funded by EPI starts in October 2026 offering a €10 voucher for paying with Wero. Wero had reached about 56 million users in Europe by late July.
Why it matters
Wero's credibility depends on merchant acceptance, not user counts, and until now German e-commerce adoption has been thin. A retailer of Decathlon's size committing online with a stated path to the store estate gives EPI its first substantive German acceptance reference and gives banks an argument for account-to-account at checkout — the direct route around card interchange that German retail has wanted for a decade.
What to watch
Whether the in-store terminal integration actually ships across the 110-plus German stores, and whether the October voucher campaign produces adoption that survives the incentive ending.
