Toscafund backs CellPoint's Zenith with $34m investment
EU
What happened
CellPoint Digital raised USD 34m from Toscafund, managed by its private-equity affiliate Penta Capital, alongside a new leadership team: Kevin Murphy as group CEO, Michael Kelly as chairman and Patrick Uckermark as chief product and technology officer. The money funds 50 new roles across product, data, AI, sales and partnerships in Europe, the Americas and Asia, and the launch of Zenith, an AI decisioning layer that sits above any payment orchestrator, CellPoint's own or a third party's.
Why it matters
Orchestration is crowded and undifferentiated, and CellPoint's answer is to sell a layer above it rather than another router, aimed at airline and hospitality merchants where approval rates and cost of payments move margin directly. A control-plane-above-the-orchestrator position, if it sells, reframes what an orchestrator is worth. Backing it with a new CEO and chairman at the same time says the investor bought a turnaround, not a growth round.
What to watch
Whether Zenith wins merchants who already run a competing orchestrator, whether the 50 hires land in Europe, and whether other orchestrators answer with their own decisioning layer.
