mBank becomes the ninth Polish bank to switch on BLIK recurring payments
What happened
mBank launched BLIK Recurring Payments in its mobile banking app on 8 October 2026, becoming the ninth Polish bank to offer the service, which is developed by Polski Standard Płatności, the BLIK operator in which mBank is a shareholder. A customer selects BLIK Recurring Payments at a merchant checkout, enters a BLIK code and approves the mandate in the banking app; later charges are then taken on the agreed terms, either automatically or after the customer confirms each one.
All active mandates are visible in real time and consent for future payments can be withdrawn in the app at any time, and no card details are stored because consent is granted and revoked in the app. Accepted subscriptions include OpenAI, CANAL+, Onet Premium and Canva, and through Autopay the mandate can also cover motorway tolls. Cashless data put mBank second among Polish banks with nearly 2.7 million active BLIK users at the end of March 2026.
Why it matters
Recurring billing is the one slot where cards had kept a structural advantage over Poland's domestic code-based method, because a subscription needs stored credentials and BLIK deliberately stores none. A bank-held mandate that the customer can revoke in the app solves that without card-on-file, and with the second-largest BLIK base now live the method becomes a credible default for Polish subscription checkouts rather than a one-off payment tool.
The merchant list is the tell: the global subscription businesses that normally sit on card-on-file are the ones accepting it, which is where card issuers earn the steady interchange that a mandate on account-to-account rails does not pay.
What to watch
How many of the remaining Polish banks switch it on and how fast, whether subscription merchants begin to present BLIK ahead of cards, what it does to card-on-file volumes in Poland, and whether BLIK takes the recurring mandate into the European Network for Payments interoperability work it has so far stayed out of.
